The Tide of Things

The Tide of Things is a short-story which won joint first prize in the 2014 Andrew Charman Philosophy and Literature Essay Competition, University of Warwick.

Synopsis

As Connor awaits his degree result, he feels he may finally be on the cusp of getting his life into gear. After all, if his grades come out right, a white-collar job in London’s glamorous publishing world is on the cards. But Connor feels strangely encumbered by a nagging sense of uneasiness about his future. Why had he even bothered applying, all those years ago, and against all odds, to a Russell Group university to study literature and philosophy in the first place? And will moving up in the world somehow get him closer to finding fulfilment in life, or will it just turn out to be a deferment of all the important questions? As a drizzly summer’s day in England unfolds, Connor makes some faltering steps toward a clarification of these perennial matters of existence and the heart.
